About Early Medicineby Ana Condor -

Ancient tribes

5000 years ago, people thought that illnesses are the result of evil living in humans bodies. They also believed that gods and superior spirits are punishing people through diseases. The practice of magic and witchcraft was popular amongst many tribes, through charms, images of gods and spells to drive away the evil spirits. A medicine man's kit would contain teeth, belles, lizard skin, flints, animal claws and carved sticks.

People also started using herbal remedies and by trial and error learned how to cure stomach aches and fevers. They had a witch doctor in the community, probably the most important figure in the village. He would treat people with simple herbal remedies and magic , type of medicine practiced in many cultures.Early medici ne was practiced the way north tribal indians did hundreds of years ago and the way some tribes practice it today.

The ancient chinese believed that the body was ruled by two forces, the light and the dark, wich they called Yin and Yang. The body would become ill if one force would overcome the other and the balance would be altered
The acupuncture was the way to bring back the balance between the two... and today, this philosophy continues to be behing the practice .
Also sandpainting was an important part of Navaho Medicine. The Medicine Man (or Hatalii) paints loosely upon the ground of a hogan, where the ceremony takes place, or on a buckskin or cloth tarp, by letting the colored sands flow through his fingers with control and skill.

Ancient Mesopotamians believed in the spectrum of illness .
The believed that diseases come either from an evil spirit or a phisical problem, such as worms. The medic man would decide from wich side the illness is coming from and send the pacient either to a herbalist or to wicthcraft practitioner.

Egyptians had a very sophisticated medicine. They would sometimes rely on the gods power to receive healing, but they also treated ilnesses, operate minor health problems and treted things like scorpion bites. They sucked the blood from the wound and bound the affected limb to stop it from spreading. They must have learned a lot from the process of mummification.Preparing the dead for the burial involved cutting the body open and seing what were the effects of the disease.
