About Saint Thomas Becket

Q:   Ask a Question about About Saint Thomas Becket
Saint Thomas Becket (1118-1170) was an English priest and politician.

He was chancellor to Henry II (1155-1162), when he was appointed archbishop of Canterbury. The interests of the church soon conflicted with those of the crown, and Becket was assassinated; he was canonized in 1172.

A friend of Henry II, Becket was his chancellor, but on becoming archbishop of Canterbury in 1162 transferred his allegiance to the church.

In 1164 he opposed Henry's attempt to regulate the relations between church and state, and had to flee the country; he returned in 1170, but the reconciliation soon broke down. Encouraged by a hasty outburst of the king's, four knights murdered Becket before the altar of Canterbury cathedral.

He was declared a saint, and his shrine became the busiest centre of pilgrimage in England until the Reformation.
