Children and not only enjoy going to the circus each time this comes in their town. They beg their parents to take them to the circus because they like to see the clowns and all those animals which take part in all kind of tricks to amuse us. Then, the zoo in the town is the best place to choose when your children get bored in the house and want a change. But not only children enjoy to visit the zoo from time to time; adults also do this because it is an escape from the daily routine. They like to see what animals have been brought in the zoo, if there are any, and feed them from behind the gates.
But have you thought for just a minute that those animals in the zoos or circuses don’t feel comfortable in those cages? Can we say that people exploit these animals to
amuse us and make us forget about daily problems?
On one hand, it is true that these animals are forbidden independence and free movement. They cannot take advantage of the space they would have had if they had lived in wilderness. At the zoo, birds and animals have to live in small cages and captivity does not permit them to run or fly as much as they want to. Then, elephants used in circuses and traveling shows are controlled by force and by fear and memory of punishment. Chains and bullhooks, wooden or fiberglass rods with sharp metal hooks or gaffs on one end, are standard tools used by handlers to discipline elephants and keep them in check. But sometimes these intelligent, emotional, and sensitive animals simply snap because of the years of constant servitude and beatings. A bullhook will never protect the public from a rampaging elephant. Lethal force is the only way.
On the other hand, it is good to keep in captivity some species of animals, because people still practice hunting them for their fur. Consequently, there are many cases of endangered animals, both because of hunting but also from causes of destruction of their habitat.
To conclude, we can point that man has the obligation to protect the environment and the animals which are in a danger of extinction, by keeping them in zoos. But at the same time he doesn’t have the right to apply violent means in order to oblige animals entertain people.
