Avril Lavigne - The Teen Pop Slayer

Q:   Ask a Question about Avril Lavigne - The Teen Pop Slayer
We all know that Britney Spears set the model for every teenage girl who tops the charts: Flash lots of cleavage, but be devout and polite (or at least, this was her original image and message). Then there's a total different approach: the Avril Lavigne approach. Her approach is more like a rock-delinquent than juvenile virgin-sweet girl. Avril Lavigne said: "The other night, I got into three fights". I was at a club and some girl was giving me attitude. When people are drinking, they get mouthy. She pushed me, and I got her down on the floor. Security came, and because I was on top, they threw me out." Avril Lavigne's management has warned her multiple times that if she gets arrested and even worse, deported from the United States; it might be fatal to her career. And her career is just at the beginning. It started with the single "Complicated" and it continued with multiple no.1 hits and some extremely well sold albums.

Avril Lavigne was born and grew up in Napanee, Ontario, a small Canadian town with a population of 5,000 residents. Her father, Jean-Claude Lavigne, worked for the phone company; while her mother Judith-Rosanne "Judy" Loshaw stayed home. All her life, Avril Lavigne wanted to become a famous pop star. We can say that she begun her career by singing gospel in church turned into performing country songs by Faith Hill and the Dixie Chicks at county fairs and talent contests. When she was 12 years old, she borrowed her father's old guitar. She practiced a lot and taught herself to play Lenny Kravitz's song "Fly Away". She played that song obsessively, over and over again. This was that thing that started her love for music. During that period, Avril Lavigne's favorite bands were the Goo Goo Dolls, Matchbox Twenty and Hanson: "Check out the lead singer! He's adorable!" she enthuses. Then she reflects, "The funny thing is, we kind of look alike."

Avril Lavigne's first kiss came in 9th grade. The story is quite simple. Her parents were away one night and a boy snuck over to her house. She just wanted to get it done, and she said during an interview related to her personal life: "It sucked, because I didn't know what I was doing -- and I couldn't even blame it on alcohol." The circumstances are not important. The important thing is that Avril Lavigne was a "wild" teenager from the beginning.

When she was 16 years old, she signed a first deal, a demo deal, with the Canadian label Nettwerk. They sent her down to New York to work with producer Peter Zizzo. While she was living in New York, she knew for the first time the horrors of the modern society and the difference between her small and peaceful village and the huge, cold and harsh New York City. Avril Lavigne says that outside the window of her West Village apartment, she could see transvestites and hookers wondering around. One day, while she was waiting for a taxi, a man flashed his bankroll and asked, "You working tonight?" After this even, she started carrying a knife. For the first time in her life, she faced the fear of the unknown and this first experience is going to have a huge influence in her music and lyrics.

Avril Lavigne signed with Arista and she was capable to resist their efforts and temptation to sing other people's songs. She wanted her own songs, her own album, and her own creation. She also declined suggestions that she should have her teeth bleached, or wear something sexier than her usual outfit of Dickies, a tank top and a necktie. This is her original statement related to her outfit: "I don't want to walk around in Britney Spears clothes, with high heels and those tight little pants where I can't sit down. How uncomfortable is that, eh?" This shows up a powerful personality. It also shows that Avril Lavigne wanted to build her own style and to become popular with her image alone. I think it was the best possible decision. Without this decision, most probably, we would have just another Britney Spears or a Britney Spears bad copy.

Her debut single "Let Go" is a tuneful rock-pop blend of adolescent angst and look-at-me rage. It is something between Alanis Morissette and Michelle Branch. Every song is true, Lavigne says. "Losing Grip" blends a Dido melody with big guitars, vocal histrionics and lyrics about an ex-boyfriend. "I really like performing it when I'm mad," Avril Lavigne says. "And I'm always mad at boys."
Her style and her music are unique. Unlike many other artists, Avril Lavigne managed to release a new trend.
