Goran Visnjic, a Croatian actor was born in Dalmatian the coastal city of Sibenik, Yugoslavia. His father was a bus driver and mother worked in a food market. He has one older brother named Josko.

He made many appearances in plays throughout his childhood. He made his screen debut at a very young age of 16 in the movie Braca po materi which turned out to be very controversial in which he played the role of a young Croatian extremist.

As Yugoslavia began to broke he started serving a yearlong tour with the JNA. He left the JNA and returned to his home town and joined the Croatian army in order to defend his home town against the Serbs.
He joined the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Zagreb after leaving the Croatian army.

He was the youngest actor to chosen for the role of Hamlet in Shakespeare's Hamlet.

He won several Orlando Awards during 1994 to 2000 for his portrait of doomed prince. He also demonstrated his expertise in the part of Hamlet during an episode of ER when he recited the line “To be or not to be” soliloquy in Croatian.

Before ER, he had small speaking roles in movies such as The Peacemaker and Committed. He appeared in Madonna's music video “The Power of Goodbye” in 1998.

Visnjic's break out role of Risto, the Bosnian driver, gave way for him in ER for the role of the unnamed doctor replacing George Clooney. He joined ER in the 6th season and eventually he became the show's male lead in 11th season.

He also co-starred in the movie The Deep End and voice stared in Ice Age. Visnjic was one of the four finalists for the role of James Bond but eventually lost out to Daniel Craig.

Visnjic married Ivana Vrdoljak a Croatian sculptor who was the daughter of filmmaker Antun Vrdoljak.

They live in Los Angeles. In April 2007, they adopted a baby boy and named him Tin after the Croatian poet Tin Ujevic.

He is also an active member for the American and European rights and also appeared with his dog in a photograph in PETA”s first Eastern European anti-fur campaign.

He was named One of TV's Sexiest Men in the June 5-June 11, TV Guide. He was also named the Best Croatian Actor in 2004.
