Bronte Family of English Writers

Q:   Ask a Question about Bronte Family of English Writers
Bronte family of English writers, including the three sisters Charlotte (1816-1855), Emily Jane (1818-1848) and Anne (1820-1849), and their brother Patrick Branwell (1817-1848).

Their best-known works are Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre in 1847 and Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights in 1847. Later works include Anne's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall in 1848 and Charlotte's Shirley in 1849 and Villette in 1853.

The Brontes were brought up by an aunt at Haworth rectory (now a museum) in Yorkshire.

In 1846 the sisters published a volume of poems under the pen names Currer (Charlotte), Ellis (Emily) and Acton (Anne) Bell. In 1847 (using the same names), they published the novels Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, and Agnes Grey, Anne's much weaker work.

During 1848-1849 Branwell, Emily, and Anne all died of tuberculosis, aided in Branwell's case by alcohol and opium addiction; he is remembered for his portrait of the sisters. Charlotte married her father's curate, A. B. Nicholls, in 1854, and died during pregnancy.
