Causes and cure for loss of smell & taste

Q:   Ask a Question about Causes and cure for loss of smell & taste
Causes and cure for loss of smell & taste Smell and taste are our basic and fundamental activities performed by main sensory organs. They are a major part of our daily routines and we simply can't imagine a life without smelling things and tasting food.

Through smell we can know many things. We enjoy perfumes and other sweet fragrances, we come to know if there is a gas leak or burning or something, or several similar other things can be predicted and concluded based on the ability to smell.

The ability to taste is not just limited with enjoying delicious foods but that quality plays a fundamental role while activities like cooking, because if you don't know the taste of what you've cooked how can you serve? Similarly, tasting abilities are used in several other aspects of life in checking and concluding things.

Life wo uld be too difficult without these two senses. It has been concluded by researches that due to deterioration of nerves that control senses related to smell and taste at older ages, the ability of tasting and smelling is reduced to a greater extent after the age of 60.

In younger folk the problem might creep up with different reasons like, blockage in nasal track due to growth of polyps, nasal or sinus infections, infections in upper respiratory track, etc. all these symptoms may lead to disturbance in functioning of smell and taste senses.

Even in some cases any kind of head injury may result in the loss of smelling and tasting abilities or some people are born with this disability due to congenital anosmia or dysomia.

The cure and treatment of this disability needs a lot of study. You need to consult a good doctor who studies your history, the reason due to which this disability occurred, your reports, CT scans, X-Rays, etc. and then starts the treatment. If your doctor says it is due to common cold and nasal congestion then get some hot shower or steam bath.

It will help a lot. Other major thing is quit smoking as it is very harmful in this context. In some severe cases you might also have to undergo surgery, otherwise normal antibiotics would do just fine.
