Generally speaking, censorship refers to preventing the access of the public to information. In case you are wondering who may take such a decision, it is the controlling groups who believe that others are not allowed to access the information which is being censored. Governments usually do that in most of the countries in the world.
There is a form of positive censorship, that is of some types of sensitive information, such as commercial secrets and intellectual property, official secrets and legal privileges, but actually, this is not regarded as censorship. Of course, all this within the limits which are recognized in general as being reasonable! Therefore, censorship is usually considered to be an unnecessary and repressive secrecy in an oppositi
on with a reasonable and expected level.
The freedom of speech and other forms of human expression can also be affected by censorship. In a very aggravated form, it can take the form of repression, dictatorship or even human right abuse.
The democratic countries rarely experience censorship. The worst that can happen there is a kind of scientific censorship, in order to ensure the fact that the conclusions to be drawn match the desires and purposes of the political parties, of the religious bodies or of the pressure groups.
Censorship is a term that is often used in a pejorative sense, in order to describe the belief of the people that some group controlling certain information is using this control improperly or for its own benefit. The group may also be denying the access to information, which the people believe should be made accessible.
In my opinion, the most common forms of censorship are the political and the religious ones. The political censorship occurs when governments keep secrets from their people, in order to prevent a revolt. Democratic countries do not officially approve of political censorship. The religious censorship is a method of removing any material that objects to a certain faith and usually refers to a dominant religion forcing its limitations on less dominant ones.
To sum it up, censorship is a reality of our everyday existence, no matter where we might live.
