The biggest turning point in my life so far was undoubtedly the day I left home to go to the college. At the age of eighteen, I wasn't apart from my parents more than two weeks so I viewed my new independence with a mixture of apprehension and excitement.
Immediately prior for leaving home, I had been on holiday with some friends, so I cannot say what I had had the chance to get too worried about the move. However, when the day came to pack my things, I began to wonder if I had made the right decision. I tried to console myself with the thought that I was moving on to a better life but there was still a nagging doubt in the back of mind. Foremost in my thoughts was that I was leaving all my friends behind so it was with certain sadness that I made my way to the s
tation.
By the time I arrived at my destination, I was conceived I had made a terrible mistake. I was depressed, lonely and more terrified than I had ever been in my life. However, once I had been shown to my room and had met some of the other students, I began to feel a lot more positive. Within a few days, I was feeling more settled in my new surroundings and all my doubts and feared were vanished. There were so many new things to experience and people to meet that I did not have time to feel lonely. About after a week, when lectures began, I was eagerly looking forward to my courses and, needless to say, very excited about my new life.
One of the main reasons why this was such an important change for me was that my life was taking a completely new direction. I felt in control for the first time and I was doing what I wanted. Despite the practical problems of looking after myself and the fact that I was on my own, I soon realized that I could manage very well.
For me, at least, leaving home was quite a traumatic experience which involved a certain amount of stress and anxiety. However, it must be said that this was very short-lived and the benefits far outweighed the disadvantages. People have to move on and there is always a change in our lives. Perhaps one of the lessons we should learn is how to turn those changes to our best advantage.
