If we take an overall look at the entire RTS genre we can distinguish 2 RTS archetypes: those RTS that involves some kind of weird, creepy aliens that usually are in an open conflict with the human race and those RTS that reproduce some historical event or simply are inspired from historical events in order to create a fantastic world.
There are many that claim that the PC platform is perfect for strategically minded players. Using a perfect balance of game mechanics, Dawn of Discovery is one of the best real time strategy game since Empire: Total War.
One of the hardest things that a strategy game should do is to assure that it is as simple and understandable for a new player as it is for a dedicated player. Dawn of Discovery does that. Even if you may be a bit confused at the begi
nning, soon you will realize that every menu has its logic and purpose, nothing is random. In addition, Dawn of Discovery doesn't throw you in the middle of a scenario and just wishes you "good luck". Helpful and useful information is everywhere, easy to access and use. Additionally, the game will announce when some breakthrough event is happening. This feature is particularly useful when you administrate large cities because in this way you won't be surprised by some major event like: "Surprise! You're city is burning!".
As in most RTS games, in Dawn of Discovery your citizens will demand "bread" and "circus". After you have satisfied that need, you can focus on more important things as gaining more power. As the game progresses, additional skills in managing your economy will be needed but these skills can be trained during the early campaigns. The only bad thing that can be found in this game is that it wipes out the entire geographical slate between levels. This can be a bit disappointing especially if we consider the heavy emphasis of city building, removing the personal achievement effect. However, let's hope that won't be the case in future generations.
Graphical elements are also important, no matter the game type, because without at least a decent look, a game won't attract too many fans. Dawn of Discovery is one of the best looking games of its genre, and even better, you can run this game at full capabilities even on lower systems. This is a huge plus.
In conclusion, Dawn of Discovery is a beautiful game, a game that is worth playing at least once and you won't be disappointed in the process.
