For the beginning, India can be considered one of the most interesting countries in the world, with a mixed religion, as 83% of the Indians are Hindu and about 11% are Muslim. There are also large groups of Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains.
In what concerns its people and language we should point out that Hindi, English and other fourteen languages are the official languages in India. Only about 3% of the population speaks English, but many people do not accept Hindi as an official language, so English is used a lot in governme
nt, education, science and business. It is also the language that many Indians use to speak to each other if they don’t share the same first language.
How much do you know about the life in the cities? Well, India is a country of many contrasts. There are many wealthy people but millions of people who own very little. In the cities, there are terrible slums and thousands of people live on the streets. The Indian government has done a lot to improve things but improvements in health care mean that the population is growing very fast.
Is India an independent country? For 200 years, India was controlled by the British. Since independence in 1947 many changes have occurred: food production and health care have improved; Indians now live 25 years longer, on average. Then, education has developed, twice as many people can now read and write. Also, industrial production has noticed some changes: it is now six times bigger than in 1947 and, consequently, India is now one of the world’s largest industrial nations.
We should also make some reference to the country’s food. Therefore, the main foods of India are rice, wheat and pulses. Most Hindus do not eat beef and many are completely vegetarian. Muslims do not eat pork. Indians like to eat many kinds of curries, with vegetables, seafood, meat or eggs in a ‘hot’ sauce.
Finally, India has a monsoon climate, with winds that reverse in the summer and winter, the summer being very hot (50 C in some places) and very wet. All in all, one should not hesitate in discovering the beauties and the particular aspects of India because he will find an interesting culture and some unique traditions in the world.
