Things have changed compared to the last decades, when the majority of women stood at home taking care of children and the household, their husbands being the ones who worked and maintained the family. Once with the emancipation of women, these felt the need to work and feel them-selves independent from the financial point of view. Marriage nowadays doesn’t mean that the husband is the only responsible for making money and the woman’s role is that of staying at home, taking care of her husband and children, if any. On the contrary, there are many women who earn more than their husbands and they are the ones who support the expenses.
In Romania, women have understood this shift, too and there are very few who stay at home after getting married. Some of these may ha
ve a very rich husband, who doesn’t want them to work because he can offer them everything. They only spend time going shopping, meeting friends and taking care of a children, maybe. On the other hand, there are women who, after getting married, must stay at home because they don’t have a place where to work or because of some recent health problems.
But in my opinion, women in my country usually work after getting married because the majority of young couples need to work together in order to make a future. Having two salaries means more chances to invest money in a nice flat, a modern car and thinking of having a baby and offer him good living conditions. Moreover, being married doesn’t suppose that your husband will maintain you and buy you everything you want. The modern woman enjoys going to beauty saloons frequently, buy some expensive clothes and the modest salary of her husband cannot afford all these trifles.
To conclude, getting married nowadays involves sharing happiness or sad moments with a person next to you, and the woman’s role in the family has multiplied. Apart from taking good care of the husband and children, she also wants to have a well-paid job in order to be able to contribute at a good maintenance of the household but, at the same time, to be independent from her husband financially.
