Do you often read to your children?

Do you often read to your children?by Cristina Nuta -

I remember my childhood was a happy one. I used to spend a lot of time with my parents and we were very close one with the other. We enjoyed spending a lot of time in the parks or somewhere outside the house, and it’s a real pleasure for me to take the family album and revive those moments of happiness.

One of the things that characterises my childhood is the fact that almost each night my parents used to read me something. Stories with fairs and Princes charming, dragons and witches, stories with a happy or a sad ending, all made my dreams and evenings more pleasant. Each story made me more curious to listen to another one and my parents took turns in reading them for me.

Maybe this is the explanation according to which I am so attracted by literature and fic tion, as I like to read books of all genres. And another consequence is that I do the same for my children. Being a good and modern mother, at the same time, is a very important thing for me. As all the other children, mines also want to hear stories before getting asleep and I always try to read them a nice story.

It is very exciting to watch them being so attentive while I am reading something and to answer them all kinds of questions each time they don’t understand something. I also use to tell them the stories I remember from my childhood but, likewise, I buy recent editions of stories for children. My children adore watching the coloured photos in the books and I also have to use my imagination a lot to explain them certain things, especially about fantastic characters and events.

To conclude, my advice is that all parents should try to read their children stories, especially when these are young. This helps their imagination to develop and makes their childhood much more pleasant. Moreover, they should avoid telling their offspring that they are exhausted after a hard day's work or that they don't know any story to say, because these are only excuses. And the most important is to communicate with your children, and the hours spent together with them reading or inventing a pleasant story, represent just the beginning of a good relationship parent-child, based on communication.
