It is very important to protect nature and the environment we live in, for a better functioning of the ecological system. But, still, man seems not to take into account this because he destroys great treasures nature has left us and which we should take care of.
One of the problems that concerns Romania in this respect is represented by the Danube and its delta. It seems that the ecological situation of the delta has deteriorated in the last two years, according to a study made by a scientific research institute. In 2005, the responsible for the protection of the biosphere in the Danube delta said she would respect all programmes in order to protect the reservation of the of the biosphere of the Danube delta and also to improve the economical and ecological situa
tion of this space.
But the present situation shows that there has been a change, but from a negative point of view. Therefore, the Danube delta has transformed itself form a reservation which used to receive awards in 2004 for its ecological situation, into an overcrowded area, because of the development of economical activities here, especially naval transport. The consequence is the double of mineral oil products into the waters of the Danube, compared to the previous years.
The experts have noticed that this was also caused by two important facts: on one hand, the growth of naval traffic on Chilia arm and, on the other hand, by the meteorology conditions. Therefore abundant rains and floods led to the cleaning of roads, soils and platforms where hydrocarbons were remade and, implicitly, these were thrown into the waters of the Danube.
It is essential that people in Romania protect this reservation, because it is the third in the world, after the Coral Reef in Australia and the Galapagos Archipelago in Ecuador, in what concerns the biological biodiversity. Delta has more than 5400 species of plants and animals, some of these being on the point of extinction, the value of the natural inheritance being recognized by the inclusion of this in the programme called ‘Man and Biosphere’ of UNESCO.
