England to pay price

Q:   Ask a Question about England to pay price
Arsene Wenger had told Fabio Capello that he would pay the price for his short-sightedness over Theo Walcott as it was revealed that the winger was then a selection doubt with a back injury for England’s matches against Croatia and Slovenia.

Arsene Wenger was frustrated as Walcott was called up to play for Capello’s England team thereby ensured that Walcott would make a late return to pre-season training.

Pearce wanted Walcott for the European Under-21 Championship in Sweden and was fully supported by Capello in his decision.
Walcott returned to training with Arsenal on 27 July and Wenger gave him a run-out in the club’s final pre-season friendly match.

He played for 45 minutes at the Mestalla where they were defeated 2-0 and he suffered inflammation to his lower back. Wenger r uled him out of Arsenal’s Premier League visit to MU and was not confirmed that he would be able to play for Capello.

When a player comes back on 27 July and start the season on 15 August, he couldn’t be fit because the ideal preparation time is 4 to 6 weeks. Walcott started England’s World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Kazakhstan before he flew to Sweden to join the Under-21s.

He was dropped by Pearce for the second group game against Spain but he played some part in all five of the team’s fixtures.

Wenger was asked regarding the Pearce’s decision to take Walcott to the tournament was a selfish one. Wenger said that it was result oriented and once a player was already playing for the national team what was the reason to take him with under 21s whose intention was to promote players to the full team? And then he was sitting on the bench.

Wenger came to know about Walcott’s injury when England’s doctors informed him. Walcott joined up with Capello’s squad on August 10 to prepare for a friendly affair against the Dutch.

England Medics told Wenger that Theo had a back problem but they would take him to Amsterdam and told that it would get clear in one or two days. It was not the end of the world but it was a bit linked with the whole package.
