Gypsies Children are One of the Most Defavorised Groups of Children

Gypsies Children are One of the Most Defavorised Groups of Childrenby Monique Barb -

Rroma –gypsies- children are one of the most defavorised groups of children and they need special care in order to get out of this difficult situation.

Poverty and pauperity of the rroma –gypsies- families as well as prejudice still persisting in the mentality of the majority of the population, together with the strange inertia and resilience of some rroma –gypsies- parents towards perspectives offered by enrolling them into the educational system.

These are the main reasons that contribute to their marginalization, by depriving them access to equal chances and equal rights that all Romanian children enjoy throughout the country.

Existence of schools with a big number of gipsy students raises the problem of accumulation of capital (social, human), condition, values that the gipsy can benefit by being educated in the formal contexts that exists in the system of Romanian education. Existence of forms which contains only gipsy students raises the problem of the formal education benefit.

The cultural diversity represents a premise of accumulation of a superior social capital and, in the same time, a capital that woks in the conditions of Romanian society. Without having social relationships ethnical diverse in the middle of school, the gipsy children are deprived in future social opportunities such as finding a job by informal relationships or, more than that, in obtaining a constructive feedback on life projects intended for having success inside the Romanian society.

The coarseness of education in schools with a high number of gipsy students is also due to the process of “migration” of teachers and of some students inside the Romanian educational system. Migration tendencies, for both categories, are from schools less endowed (material and human) to schools better endowed.

Whatever the paradigm where we situate the problem of the access on a superior education, the variable “confidence in education” is a central one. In the absence of trust in formal education, the educational system becomes futile, and the family education is seen like an alternative for some gipsy parents.
