Has Genetic Science Gone Too Far

Has Genetic Science Gone Too FarHas Genetic Science Gone Too Far?

by Diana-Mara Anghelina -

Genetic science is a field that has experienced enormous advances during the last few years. The researchers working in dedicated institutions are very highly educated people, who have probably dedicated their life to a goal that no one thought it was possible some 10 or 15 years ago.

Genetics can be defined as the science of genes, heredity and the variations of organisms.

Genes are the ones to encode the information necessary for determining the final physical appearance of a particular organism. This is a very interesting field of study, no wonder almost all of the great minds in science have chosen it as their goal in life. It is amazing how powerful genetics can be, provided that it does not get into the hands of the wrong people.

I believe that all of you will agree with the fact that genetics determines much, but not all of the appearance of organisms, including humans. It is not a sure thing yet, but genetics is supposed to also influence the way humans act. Yes, we also have to take into account the environmental differences and random factors which play a major part in the life of humans. Let us take two identical twins for example, which is practically a clone resulting from the early splitting of an embryo. The twins will have the same DNA, but still the personalities and the fingerprints will be different.

The term "genetics" is often widely associated with the notion of genetic engineering. This is a field where the DNA of an organism is being modified for one reason or the other. The truth of the matter is that most research in genetics has the noble goal of understanding and explaining the effect of genes on phenotypes and in the role of genes in populations rather than genetic engineering.

We are now faced with the problem whether genetics has probably gone too far, not whether it has evolved too slowly. But given the advantages it provides in studying the effects of human disorders as well as their causes, genetic science can only continue it evolution.
