How are fossils formed?

Q:   Ask a Question about How are fossils formed?
How are fossils formed? Fossils result from the death of an animal millions of years ago. The soft parts rot quickly, and the bones or shell are scattered by scavenging animals. Some of these remains are buried in mud or sand.

If they are not disturbed, more mud is deposited until the remains are deeply buried. Under great pressure from deposits above, the mud eventually compacts into sedimentary rock.

The fossil of a complete animal is a very rare find. Unless the animal fell into mud or was buried, its remains would have been eaten by other animals. This is the reason why fossils of small parts of an animal are much more common.
