Jane Fonda is an American actress, political activist, fashion model and fitness guru. In 1954, while attending a charity performance of The Country Girl with her father she was attracted to acting and made the decided to make the film line her career.

She attended The Emma Willard School in Troy, New York and Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, where she was not a worthy student.

After graduating from Vassar she went to Paris to study art. When she returned after two years, she met Lee Strasberg and that meeting she considers as a changing point in her life.

In between 1960 to 1970 she acted in almost two movies per year starting in 1960 with Tall Story, in which she played a college cheerleader engaging a basketball star. In 1962 she came in Period of Adjustment and Walk on the W ild Side and for her role as a prostitute in Walk on the Wild Side she got Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer. In 1963, she acted in Sunday in New York.

Her career breakthrough came with the film Cat Ballou in 1965 in which she played the role of a schoolteacher turning into a criminal. It got five Oscar nominations and was listed in the year's top ten films at the box office.

Then she acted in comedies Any Wednesday and Barefoot in the Park. In 1968, she acted in Barbarella, after which she was considered a sex symbol. Her first Oscar nomination was for her role in They Shoot Horses, Don't They? in 1969. She got her first Academy Award for Best Actress in 1971 for her role as a prostitute in Klute and won her second Oscar in 1978 for Coming Home.

Between 1971 and 1977, Fonda did not get much success. In 1977 with the film Fun With Dick and Jane she made a "comeback". She was nominated for Oscar for her role in Julia. She also acted in popular films The China Syndrome and The Electric Horseman.

In 1980, she starred in Nine to Five. In order to get nearer to her father, she purchased the screen rights to the play On Golden Pond . Henry Fonda got his only Academy Award for Best Actor for this film.

For the 1986 movie The Morning After, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role of an alcoholic murder suspect. In 1990 she acted in a romantic drama Stanley & Iris and later in 1991 she announced her retirement from the film industry.

After 15 long years of break from movies, in May 2005, she returned to film industry with the movie Monster-in-Law and in 2007 she was seen in movie Georgia Rule.

Fonda returned to theatre after a long time playing Katherine Brandt in Moises Kaufman's 33 Variations and her acting earned her a Tony nomination for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play.
