Jpegcrop: a viable alternative for the more popular IrfanView

Q:   Ask a Question about Jpegcrop: a viable alternative for the more popular IrfanView
Jpegcrop: a viable alternative for the more popular IrfanView Even if this software market segment (image viewer and editors) is quite populated, only a few applications are truly successful. Maybe the most popular software is IrfanView that offers a wide variety of features and options with a free license.
Until recently, IrfanView was the superior application without any kind of competition. Jpegcrop is the software that challenges IrfanView and it has the potential to overcome it.

First of all, just like IrfanView, Jpegcrop is completely free. On top of that, it does not require installation and this is a huge advantage. Of course, IrfanView comes with a portable version but Jpegcrop has two options in one application: portable and desktop versions in one single program. All you have to do is downloading and run the executable file from your computer or from any portable device.

From options point of view, Jpegcrop and IrfanView are quite similar. IrfanView has a small advantage but we must take into consideration years and years of development while Jpegcrop is still“young” software.

Jpegcrop has potential to evolve and become better and better. Initially, Jpegcrop was a simple interface for Jpegtran but now it developed into a standalone software. In a relatively short time, Jpegcrop evolved from the interface “status” into a powerful and useful application. We must appreciate developers’ hard work because without their work this transformation cannot occur.

Jpegcrop is not IrfanView, at least not yet. Maybe it never intended to be but with the latest progress I think I’m not wrong when I assume that Jpegcrop has more potential than ever expected. We must wait and see how things will evolve. Personally I will keep Jpegcrop into my computer (even if I have IrfanView as well).
