Keycard Technology in Modern World

Q:   Ask a Question about Keycard Technology in Modern World
Keycard Technology in Modern World The world of advanced technology has brought with it many changes. For instance, traditional locks and keys have been replaced by electronic keycards, smart cards and RFID technology. Today most of the organizations rely on key card technology for security and identification purposes.

Electronic keycards were first introduced at the hotel industry. In larger hotels, metal keys have been replaced with electronic key cards and computer systems. They are also known as Magnetic Stripe Key Cards, as they are made of plastic and a magnetic stripe is implanted within the plastic that is coded by the check-in computer and read by the lock on the hotel room door. The visitors just have to swipe the card to open the door. As these cards are anonymous and easily changed, therefore they are more s afe and efficient than the old key lock system.

Another keycard technology includes smart cards. They are also made of plastic and a microprocessor is embedded inside. This microprocessor is there for safety as it reads the data on the card and links the host computer with the card reader. They are mainly used for the purpose of secure banking, credit cards, wireless communication, and government identification and computer security systems.

Keycard technology has brought another technology known as Radio Frequency Identification or RFID. This technology has been in use by numerous companies for more than a decade now. RFID quickly gained attention because of its ability to track moving objects. As the name tells, RFID technology is based on radio frequency identification. It does not require contact or line of sight for communication.

In fact, the data can be read through the human body, clothing and non-metallic materials. The RFID tags sends encoded radio frequency to the reader through radio transmitters. Furthermore, RFID can be used in a variety of applications such as tracking of goods, persons and animals, toll collection, airport luggage tracking, payment systems, etc.

Keycard Technology is a powerful technology that has enabled companies to achieve total business visibility. By using this technology, companies can optimize business processes, gain customer satisfaction and reduce operational costs.
