- to give Ss practice in using the degrees of comparison of the adjectives

Stages:

Activity 1 – Warm-up
General competence: to interact in spoken or written communication
Specific competence: to correct mistakes
Method: dialogue
Procedure: Teacher (T) checks homework first. Ss had to do some vocabulary exercises related to the previous lesson and an exercise with adjectives, which have been revised. Ss read their homework and correct it if necessary.
Interaction: T-Ss; Ss-T
Class management: whole clas s activity
Timing: 5'-10'

Activity 2 – Lead-in
General competence: to understand written or oral messages
Specific competence: to compare things
Method: game
Procedure: 1. T asks a student who is good at drawing to come out and draw 2 large palms on the board. He/she has to draw one palm up and one palm down. Then T elicits from the class the vocabulary needed to describe a hand. The words are written on the 2 hands on the board.
2. Then in pairs Ss are asked to compare their hands from as many aspects as possible.
3. Ss form 3 circles. One student is designated by the leader of the group to go round the group and find out who has the biggest hand. When they find the person, they say: ‘X has the biggest hand in the group'
Successive students are designated to find:
The cleanest hand
The broadest hand
The dirtiest hand
The warmest hand
The youngest hand
The coldest hand
The driest hand
The most interesting hand
The strongest heart line
The longest fingers
The longest nails
The longest life line
The shortest fingers

Class management: pair work and then group work
Timing: 10'

Activity 3 – Pre-reading
General competence: to understand written or oral messages
Specific competence:
- to classify notions
- to express opinions
Method: dialogue
Procedure: 1. Ss are asked to number some features of a car in order of importance and then they have to explain their decision. Ss work in groups.
2. T asks Ss to read some questions about cars in order to find out their answers when reading the text.
Interaction: T-Ss; Ss-Ss-T
Class management: group work - individual work
Timing: 5'

Activity 4 – Reading
General competence:
- to understand written messages
- to interact in spoken communication
Specific competence: identify specific information
Method: dialogue/discussion
Procedure: As the class is split into groups, each group has to read one paragraph of the lesson. They have to find the answers to the questions they have read before. In order to do this they have to underline in their paragraph the sentences that lead them to the questions.
Interaction: T-Ss; Ss-Ss-T
Class management: group work - whole class activity
Timing: 15'

Activity 5 – Post-reading
General competence: - comprehension of what the written form means
Specific competence: - match specific vocabulary to image
Method: dialogue
Procedure: Ss are asked to identify the parts of a car.
Interaction: T-Ss; Ss-Ss-T
Class management: whole class activity
Timing: 7'

Activity 6 – Feed-back – giving assignment
General competence: production of well-formed examples in writing
Specific competence: use of the structures to convey meanings in writing
Method: dialogue
Procedure: Ss are asked to compare two cars for the next class of English
Interaction: T-Ss; Ss-Ss-T
Class management: whole class activity
Timing: 5'
