TOPIC: OVER THREE HOURS LATE
LESSON AIMS:
- To develop Ss' speaking competences
- To revise and reinforce grammar concerning past simple of regular and irregular verbs ans the conjunctions so and because
- To encourage speaking and comprehension skills
OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson the Ss will be able to:
- Use correctly the revised grammar problems
- Use the new words and phrases in particular circumstances
- Create their own situations and deal with new circumstances in a conversation
TIME: 50 min
SKILLS INVOLVED: speaking, writing
AIDS: textbook, blackboard

Stages:

Activity 1: Warm-up (3min)

Teacher's activity: T enters the classroom, greets the Ss, asks them how they are, if there are any Ss missing. T remembers the task for the day, ex. 1 pg 13 from the textbook and asks Ss to review it quickly to make sure there were no problems with solving it at home. T corrects the mistakes, if any.
Students' activity: Ss greet the T, answer the questions and in turn read the exercise.
Class management: whole-class activity
Skills: speaking, reading

Activity 2: (5 min)

Teacher's activity: T asks Ss to read Nicola's letter and answer questions like: What time did the train leave London? Why was the other girl in the compartment unhappy? How did she annoy Nicola? In what way was Nicola clumsy? In pairs, Ss answer the questions and check their mistakes with the class.
Students' activity: Ss answer the questions in pairs.
Class management: whole-class activity, pair-work
Skills: speaking, reading

Activity 3: (5min)

Teacher's activity: T shows Ss the example in the SB. Ss put the sentences in order. T goes through the answers with the whole class, referring to the letter or the dialogue where necessary. In small groups Ss correct the mistakes. They check together in larger groups
Students' activity: Ss correct the mistakes and then check them.

Activity 4: (5 min)

Teacher's activity: T checks Ss know why the example fits the first column. Ask: Can we say “yesterday week?” (No). In small groups they complete the past time adverbial phrases in the chart using the correct time word. ago, on, in, at, last, this, yesterday. T goes through the answers with the class..
Students' activity: Ss complete the chart then report to the class.

Activity 5: (5 min)

Teacher's activity: T shows Ss the examples in the textbook in the Grammar Snapshot: I arrived at 9 o'clock. and I left at ten o'clock. and asks them to compare the sentences then elicits the past tense endings of the regular verbs and the auxiliary. Ss answer in pairs then T goes through the answers with the whole class.
Students' activity: Ss perform their task.

Activity 6: (5min)

Teacher's activity: T shows the Ss the example Nicola arrived in Newquay a few hours ago. then she asks the Ss to complete the sentences with the past tense of the verb in brackets and the correct time adverbial. Ss to report back to the class in pairs.
Students' activity: Ss complete the exercise.

Activity 7: (5min)

Teacher's activity: T elicits some example questions from the class. Ss are asked to ask ten questions about their partner's past and answer the questions in pairs
Students' activity: Ss perform the task.

Activity 8: (5min)

Teacher's activity: T asks students to join the sentences with so and because in pairs. T goes through the answers with the whole class.
Students' activity: Ss solve their task.

Activity 9: (5 min)

Teacher's activity: T aks the Ss to list as many different means of transport as they can in one minute and sort them into groups: operated only by people (bike), operated by petrol (car), air transport (plane). T goes through the answers with the whole class
Students' activity: Ss perform the task
Class management: pair work
Skills: reading, speaking

Feed-back: (5 min)

Teacher's activity: The T asks Ss to complete the text with the correct verbs in the past tense.
Students'activity: Ss perform the task
