Teaching aim:
- to give practice to adjectives made up with prefixes developing speaking ability
- to guide the students to an understanding of the comparison of adjectives

Learning aim: - to improve their knowledge so that they can use adjectives to speak freely on a given topic

Personal aim: to talk less myself and involve the students more

Grammar: The degrees of comparison

Time available: 50'

Aids: pictures, worksheets, blackboard, tape, Snapshot textbook

Assumptions: There may be difficulties of pronunciation

Previous lesson: How long have you been here?

Stages/Timing: Warm-up 4' - Checking homework 5' - Presentation of the new grammar context 5' - Initial practice 10' - Cheer-up 5' - Secondar y practice 8' - Follow-up 10' - Homework 3'

Activities: The teacher greets the students, talks with them and gets them ready for the class. - The students had to read an article and answer some questions and make their own sentences with some phrases. - The Ss read the text and then identify the adjectives in the text. The teacher writes the examples popular, dependant, practical on the board and show Ss how the opposites are formed. - The teacher asks the Ss to work out the opposites of the adjectives and list them in three columns: un-, in-, im-. - The teacher asks the Ss to complete some sentences with one of the adjectives from the previous exercise with its negative prefix. - Let's sing a song! - The teacher draws a box labelled Box A and elicits Box A is big. The teacher draws another box close to the other and says Box A is big, but Box B is bigger than box A. Then the teacher draws a box bigger than the others and elicits Box C is the biggest of all. - The teacher can continue with other adjectives asking students to make their own sentences.(tall, short) - The teacher gives task-sheets with exercises practicing the degrees of comparison.
