Mc GRATH LEAVES ENGLAND IN AGONY

Q:   Ask a Question about Mc GRATH LEAVES ENGLAND IN AGONY
It was started by Steve Harmison and ended by Glenn Mc Grath. Welcome to Ashes as 17 wickets fell on the 1st day of the test played here between Australia and England.

Wickets cascaded and fell like bowling pins in a row, batsmen put to the sword first by Harmison's ferocious pace and then McGrath's skill, but by the end of a first day that left the crowd bewildered with the fast pace of it all and the commotion created by the pacers but the Australians had resumed their familiar position with the upper hand at the end of the day's play as they usually do.

The praise must definitely be given to the bowlers who bowled splendidly albeit some extra help from the pitch which didn't live up to its expectations. In reply to Australia's 190 all out England started next day's play at 92 at t he loss of seven wickets.

It had been England for the 1st half of the day and for the 1st time in the history of Ashes had Australia been restricted for a score below 200.

But the feeling of victory was short lived as in came Glenn Mc Grath and he bowled one of the most compelling spells in the history of the Ashes leaving England on a tottering 92 for 7.

This ground has seen some famous spells over the years that have gone by, but the spell by McGrath with the new ball was the finest bowling spell that this ground has ever seen.

Early on Marcus Trescothick found the boundary with an angled bat. Thereafter McGrath gave virtually nothing away and bowled tightly until Geraint Jones hammered him square to the point boundary.

Mc Grath found bounce in addition to his impeccable line and length which made him virtually unplayable by the batsmen

By that time McGrath had destroyed the cream of English batting with his lethal bowling, taking five wickets for two runs in 31 deliveries, the first of them, Trescothick, giving him his 500th test wicket.

Only Shane Warne, Muttiah Muralitharan and Courtney Walsh have done that. As with Walsh, the great West Indian, for a pace bowler to achieve such a target is a huge achievement in itself.
