The portrait which has become world famous is an art work by Leonardo da Vinci and is named as “Mona Lisa Smile”. From more than 500 years this portrait is baffling and seducing art lover with its mysterious smile. It gives a feel of a woman with real flesh and blood. The reason that portrait is famous worldwide is that is looks lively.

When a person gets only a glance of the portrait, he would be amazed to look at the degree to which Mona Lisa looks alive. It seems that she is looking at us and has a mind too.

It seems that she is a living being and looks different every time we her. How can we forget about her mysterious smile? She smiles then her smile fades and a moment later it disappears. It seems tha t she is mocking at us while on the other moment it looks as if she is carrying sadness.

Several questions were aroused by the onlookers of this portrait. Few of them are “what was wrong with this Lady’s face, How the painter did capture such a mysterious expression and why did not other artists copied it? Numerous theories were built as a consequence but Leonardo was a great observer of nature and he knew how to attain this effect.

Some scientist gave the explanation on how human visual system is designed while others gave on how the eye and brain react with different level of contrast and illumination.

The famous invention of Leonardo was sfumato in which the painting has blurred outline and mellowed colors that merges one form with another. He used sfumato with utmost deliberation in his portrait. Those who have sketched a face know that the main stress is given to two things and they are the corner of mouth and corner of eyes. Leonardo has given stress on these two things by letting them merge into a soft shadow.

That is the reason why every time she looks different. Leonardo has done an audacious work and an artist of his consummate can only will to do it.
