Monuments in London

Monuments in Londonby Herminne Tonita -

London is a royal city. The British King or Queen lives in the Buckingham Palace. Queen Elizabeth lives there with the Royal Family. Tourists are also allowed to visit the place but they are not allowed inside so as not to disturb the Queen. They stand outside to the "The Changing of the Guard". There are always guardsmen outside the palace. Every day a guard of thirty guardsmen marches to the palace and takes the place of the “old guard”. Besides this ceremony London has others like The State Opening of Parliament and the Trooping of the Color. The State Opening of Parliament is the Queen’s visit to the House of Parliament. She goes there in one of the Royal Coaches. Hundreds of people watch the procession. On the other hand, when she has to attend the Rising of th e Color(which is the flag of the state) she goes there riding and she watches the entire ceremony from her horse.

Westminster and its "Big Ben". Tourists from all over the world want to see the clock tower and hear the bells. The famous clock stands besides the Houses of Parliament. The country’s leaders speak in the Houses of Parliament. The people are represented by the 650 persons from the House of the Commons, which stands for the welfare of the common people. Those belonging to the House of the Lords are dukes, earls, lords of the great families, heads of the Church of England, judges. These two houses form the Parliament.

The Tower of London. Tower Bridge is one of the famous bridge across the Thames. It is near the Tower of London. You can see the buildings of the Tower from the river. The Imperial State Crown is one of the Crown Jewels in the Jewel House in the Tower of London. It has 3,000 stones in it: diamonds, red rubies, blue sapphires, and beautiful pearls. The Queen wears it on state occasions. Then it goes back to the Tower. The Beefeaters are soldiers who guard the Tower and The Crown Jewels. Their real name is Yeoman Warders of the Tower. Their clothes are the clothes of royal guards of the year 1500. One of the most interesting ceremonies at the Tower of London is the Ceremony of the Keys, which lock the gates of the Tower. After clocking the gates the keys are handed in to the Governor of the Tower. The ceremony takes place each night at ten o’clock for 700 years.

In what concerns the churches, there are numberless in London but one of the most interesting is St Paul's Cathedral, which stands at the top of Ludgate Hill. There are 627 steps from the floor of the cathedral to the top. Westminster Abbey is near the Houses of Parliament and is the place where all the queen, kings, writers, important personalities of England are buried.

Londoners like their parks. Office workers often sit down on benches and have their lunch in the open air. Bands play at lunchtime and in the afternoon. There are also open-air theatres, where you can see your favorite play by Shakespeare. On the streets the markets are really interesting places where they sell all kind of souvenirs which will remember you the wonderful time you had while in London.
