Wilson took his first step towards Hollywood by co-writing the screenplay & acting in Bottle Rocket. The movie served as a launch pad for Wilson with regards to his fortune & career in Hollywood.

Thereafter, he made small appearances in movies like The Cable Guy (1996), Anaconda (1997) and Armageddon (1998). However, it was his performance in Shanghai Noon (2000) that helped him create his identity as a mainstream actor rather than merely being a supporting actor.

In the movie, he got a chance to share the screen with Jackie Chan. The film grossed nearly US$100 million worldwide.

Wilsonís next venture with Ben Stiller and Will Ferrell in Zoolander(2001) acted as an icing on the cake to his upward moving career.

Thereafter, Wilson to co-star the action film Behind Enemy Line s the same year along with The Royal Tenenbaums(2001), which was a huge success. Owen Wilson had a memorable supporting role in the film as Eli Cash, a drug-addict who becomes a celebrity. He was nominated for the Academy Awards for the film.

In the year 2002, Wilson played in the action comedy I Spy, co-starring Eddie Murphy, but it was a flop. He then reunited with Jackie Chan to make a sequel of the Shanghai Noon, Shanghai Knights (2003) and the movie remake of the television series Starsky & Hutch (2004).

In the year 2005, Wilson partnered with Vince Vaughn for the Wedding Crashers which was a huge success. The film bought a lot of fame & stardom to him. Later, Owen collaborated with his brothers for The Wendell Baker Story, written by brother Luke, directed by Luke and brother Andrew.
In 2006, Wilson voiced for the Disney/Pixar film Cars.

He also starred in You, Me and Dupree with Kate Hudson, and appeared with Ben Stiller in Night at the Museum. Wilson has appeared in 10 movies with Stiller including The Cable Guy, Permanent Midnight, Meet the Fockers & the others.

Recently, in 2007, Wilson co-acted in Wes Anderson film, The Darjeeling Limited, which screened at the 45th annual New York Film Festival, the Venice Film Festival.

The following year, Wilson next starred in Drillbit Taylor, acted in Roundabout & Marley & Me (2009), co-starring Jennifer Aniston.
