When imagining the term of 'other' compared to the one of 'Romanianness' we have to refer to the concepts of inside and outside. These two terms depend one on the other because of their existence, as there can only be an 'inside' if there is an 'outside', too and the latter is also called 'the other'.
Therefore, in Romania, which can be considered an 'imagined country', the 'other' is imagined in various ways, generally as opposite to the values of Romania.
'Romanianness' refers, consequently, to a specific group of people, who have their own traditions, culture, habits, way of thinking and interests. On the other hand, the 'other' compared to 'Romanianness', can be defined from two different perspectives. First of all, it can be represented by those people who
belong to other nationalities but live in Romania for a certain period of time and who are in fact strangers, as most of them do not give up their lifestyles or habits. Secondly, the 'other' can also refer to nations which may have opposed values to 'Romanianness'. Most of these values can be closely related to each nation's past, its degree of development and evolution.
For example, countries like China, India or Arabia have different and opposed values, compared to our country and other European countries, too, because they strongly depend on religion, on family relationship, jobs and social life.
The idea of 'other' is frequently used by media, government or ethnic groups because it presents aspects of different civilizations, trying to show both the positive and negative parts of each nation. Government plays an important part as it is the tool which establishes relationships between countries and takes decisions. That is why we can define the 'other' through its own government. In what concerns the ethnic groups versus the 'other', the point is that each group is different from others, because of its own values.
But, on the other hand, 'Romanianness' and the 'other' can also interfere when dealing with friends, media, family, political and educational systems, which help states communicate one with another. Therefore, people in our country have friends or members of their families in different parts of the world. Then, media is important as it offers news about everything that happens in the world while countries communicate in areas like industry, culture, education.
All in all, when analyzing this theme, we can notice the fact that, besides the opposed values of a country compared to another, there can also exist good relations within foreign countries which have the same interests.
