In the last years, the population of Romania has diminished greatly, compared to the precedent years. The cause of this situation is the fact that more and more old people die and babies are born in a low number. According to some researches the number of babies who live no more than one year has also increased in 2007, compared to the last months of 2006. Still, we can notice a growth in the birth rate and also the larger number of young couples who decide to get married.

Romania's population has diminished basically because young couples prefer to have one baby or two mostly. In the past, couples had in average three or four children, because people had other mentalities. They did not think about poverty, as young couples today, who prefer to have just one baby and be able to offer him everything. People consider that they don't have enough money to have a lot of children as they would not be able to offer them all the things they need. Moreover, it is interesting to point here another interesting aspect: the majority of women are not just housewives, who stay at home and take care of children and of their husband. They have jobs and maybe important ones, and this state does not permit them have many children. Also, they prefer to spend their spare time making different activities and not taking care of children.

Therefore, birth rate can not cover death rate, as few people are born, meanwhile a lot of old people die. Then, little children die because of different illnesses or just because their mothers did not protect themselves while they were pregnant: they probably drank alcohol, were depressed or did not have a good alimentation.

The economical situation in Romania must get better in order for the middle class to be able to have a comfortable living standard, which will permit families to have more than one child. Even if mothers will not have enough time to raise their children, they will have the financial power to pay a baby-sitter to do this job.
