The self image is the concretized expression of the way a person sees or represents himself.
It refers to the individual perspective upon his own personality.
The formation of self image is a subjective process and it implies three main aspects:
-the importance of other people's opinion in its construction
-the elements that form the base of the others' perception
-the measure in which the conduct and motivation influence the formation of self image
There are more levels during the process of self image formation: the self, in the vision of the person that creates his self portrait is seen as the whole personality.
The self represents the image that we all consider definitory for our personality. As a consequence of the construction of our self image
we have a positive or negative appreciation upon it. The self image is not always the same that the others may have about us.
This appreciation may develop positive or negative feelings. It depends on the personality type and has important consequences upon the social integration.
The self image is formed on the basis of several factors: the report between the person and his family, his close friends, his work mates, his religious or political group. These groups can have different influences upon the self image on the basis of the theory regarding the social comparisons.
People tend to compare themselves to those similar to them and they intuitively recognize the importance of self esteem in their efficiency and mental sanity-that is why they try to improve it.
It is supposed that the students with a high self esteem are more persistent at school, feel more competent and thus have better results.
Still, the self esteem is a weak predictor of school performances, not having positive consequences later on and not being equal with the professional performances.
Although the intention is good, the implementation of the idea does not always have equal results. The low esteem teenagers may have a nice physical appearance, without noticing it, thus being negative and pessimistic about anything.
The self image is positively or negatively influenced by the social, mainly the romantic relationships of the teenagers. We can bring into discussion the people that choose multiple relationships and prefer non implication and the lack of responsibilities, searching the same superficial mates. It seems that it is more important how you feel that how you really are. The ones with a high self esteem are great in their own opinion, not in the others".
The decrease of scholar motivation brings the low self esteem, thus conducting to the ingestion of cigarettes, alcohol or drugs. Negative sexual experiences and unexpected pregnancies are found both in high and low self esteem students. The alcohol and drugs consumption is also met in both categories, the reasons being: curiosity, fun or escaping problems.
The teenagers that adopt a cruel behaviour regarding the others are less anxious and more self confident that their mates. The negative self esteem is a risk for those with eating disorders: bulimia and anorexia. The high self esteem people are more persistent in case of failure and they behave better in social relationships., they are happier and less depressive. The growth of self esteem does not solve the vice problem, the aggressions, the sexual issues, but it definitely makes people happier.
