Smoking is known to be one of the greatest single causes of death in our society, but still people forget about this, or simple ignore it. Too little seems to be done, however, to stop people taking up the habit in the first place.
To begin with, cigarettes are openly on sale in many public places and laws governing the minimum age at which they can be bought often seem to be ignored. Moreover, cigarette advertising continues to figure largely in some parts of the media, despite recent moves to outlaw this, and is, what's more often targeted at young people.
Although anti-smoking campaigns have been organized in recent years, there seem not to have been particularly effective, given the rise in the numbers of young people, especially girls, who take up smoking
each year. Whilst supporting such campaigns in principle, I would like to propose an alternative approach.
Firstly, I think that the advertising of cigarettes should be completely banned from all aspects of the media. Furthermore, the sale of cigarettes should be more tightly controlled to ensure that the law regarding underage smokers is respected. And, in addition, cigarettes should not be sold in places such as cafes and supermarkets frequented by young people and families. Their sale should instead be restricted to licensed tabacconists and sharp penalties should be imposed on those breaking the law, particularly those selling on the black market. Moreover, I believe additional classes should be introduced in schools and high-schools, in order to present children the dangers smoking has on their health. Specialists should use the best methods in order to frighten children and students about their health problems if they take up smoking.
Finally, I would like to add that, of course, it is the duty of parents, teachers and other responsible adults to set a good example; by not smoking! The environment is very important for our education and future generations are always influenced the most by what they see in their families. It is very important for each one of us to understand that smoking really represents a serious health problem and is not just an exaggeration.
