The First Experience on the Moon

Q:   Ask a Question about The First Experience on the Moon
The First Experience on the Moon by Herminne Tonita -

Neil Armstrong was the commander of the first flight to get on the moon, Apollo 11. He had been in space before on one of the two-person Gemini flights. Edwin Buzz Aldrin was the pilot of the moon landing spacecraft, named the Eagle. Michael Collins was the pilot of the command spacecraft, Colombia. He was to wait in orbit around the moon, while Armstrong and Aldrin landed and explored her surface.

Apollo 11 neared the moon at the speed of 6,500 km an hour. When the time came to separate the landing -craft from the command vehicle, Armstrong and Aldrin passed through the small opening between the two. As they were moving away from Colombia, Armstrong reported: "The Eagle has wings."

On Earth, people held their breaths. Humans were landing on the moon. Preside nt Richard Nixon gave federal government workers a day off to watch the landing on TV. About 500 million people were watching television and millions were listening to the radio -all united in that extraordinary moment when Neil Armstrong announced: " Forward, forward. Good. Tranquility base here. The Eagle has landed."

After six hours of preparation the astronauts opened the Eagle's door. Armstrong was the first man to step down onto the moon's surface. He said:" That is one small step for a man. One giant leap for mankind". This was July 21st, 1969.

The astronauts spent 21 hours 30 minutes on the moon doing various experiments. They collected approximately 30 kg of rock and soil. Since the moon's gravity is six times smaller than the Earth's, they were able to move easily and quickly. At the landing place, Armstrong and Aldrin left the American flag, some scientific equipment and a sing bearing the following words: " Here men from the planet Earth first set foot on the moon. July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind."
