The Road to Hell is Paved With Good Intentions

Q:   Ask a Question about The Road to Hell is Paved With Good Intentions
The Road to Hell is Paved With Good Intentions by Herminne Tonita -

Since ancient times man has felt the need to invent or discover something extraordinary but also to recreate the surrounding nature and himself in some way. Every new invention has brought a " silver linen through the dark clouds of our lives".

Scientists have tried to make our lives better and to improve man's standard of living. Today we can't imagine our life without a TV set, a radio, a computer, or without electricity.

On the contrary our ancestors didn't have access to the Internet or keep food in refrigerators. Therefore we can definitely take into account the improvements the society has suffered since Medieval Times.

Every discovery, every invention, like the battery, the telephone, the motor car, were made for the benefit of humanity and not for its destruction.

But everybody knows that the "road to hell is paved with good intentions". It is rather typical for humans to invent something wonderful and then discover a way in doing something dreadful with it.

For example, Alfred Nobel, a moody yet idealistic science man, discovered in 1866 the dynamite. Even though its purpose was to help humanity in building roads, rail roads, houses, the dynamite was also used to produce weapons and machines that bring death among people.

In 1888 Nobel was called "the merchant of death" by a French newspaper. The editors had probably forgotten his hope for humanity, his love for his fellow-beings, his generosity. He felt the need to repair this false picture of his goal and that is why he established the Nobel Prize, to be awarded to those who did the most in fields like science, literature, or those who fought for peace.

It goes without saying that each discovery and invention represents a step in the conquest of the unknown that lies in front of us.

All in all I would like to say that we should always encourage every person in his research for something wonderful and extraordinary, but more important, men of science should think twice before putting into practice what they have discovered and should never forget about the consequences of their actions on humanity.
