The Strange Function of the Picture in Oscar Wilde's Novel : The Picture of Dorian Gray by Herminne Tonita -

Considered by the critics of the time to be an illustration of his aesthetic views and a celebration of vice, Oscar Wilde's only novel " The Picture of Dorian Gray " surprises the modern reader because of his moral ending and obvious plea against a Parnasian or Epicurean way of life. The novel builds on popular psychological melodrama and the pursuit of hedonism cultivated by the hero of J.K. Huysman's quintessential decadent text: " A Rebours(1884)".

Dorian has been granted the means to enjoy life to the full but- paradoxically- he is afraid of life. Consequently, he seeks refuge in a pseudo-aestheticism. He is afraid of that side of his personality for which he is not prepared to accept responsibility. The aesthete cannot accept self-irony, which would transfo rm him into an object equal to all the other people, who are objects for him, because this would imply his giving up his mask in front of the world.

Aestheticism stands in quite close connection with narcissism. Dorian is a Narcissus, but a Proteic rather than a Classical one. The difference lies in the way his image is reflected: the picture reflects a distorted vision of himself, in fact his sinful soul, whereas the Classical Narcissus reflects himself in the clear waters of a well-kept mirror.

The childish manifestation of rage against his own self leads to an act of destruction, the destruction of the responsible double. But the " image " of the double only becomes more fierce. Dorian Gray cannot escape his self, whose true residence is to be found not in a simple mirror, but in the picture made by Basil: " It was the living death of his own soul that troubled him". Dorian' s double is the picture, which in the novel takes the name of " conscience". Making use of his double in this way, the hero may fully dedicate himself to art, sin and beautiful things, thinking he has no responsibility of his own. In this way, art becomes the way in which the main character saves his soul, art having the function of catharsis.

He destroys the only extension of himself that exemplifies good sense perception: the painting. He deprives himself of hope for recovering his soul- he has eliminated the last grasp of reality. The picture was the only way in which he could have possibly regarded himself as a complete person possessing soul in addition to a face. Dorian's attempt to murder his double is but a suicide under the form of the painless death of the alter ego. This gave Dorian the impression he had parted with a mean double, which seems to be the ultimate condition of any suicide. Dorian tried to evade life through art and it mystified his soul.
