To Be Or Not To Be An European

Q:   Ask a Question about To Be Or Not To Be An European
To Be Or Not To Be An European by Monique Barb -

It has been said on all TV channels, radios and newspapers that in 2007 Romania would become a member of the EU. Well that moment is here and I see no changes in every day life and nothing arises in the future.

It is said that America is the country of immigrants. If that is true we are a country of emmigrants. We have borrowed other's traditions and holidays that much that we have lost our identity. I don't know if we were accepted in the EU or we invaded them. Unfortunately you don't need an official document to call yourself an European.

The European Union is a family of European countries, which work together for peace and prosperity. The EU is, in fact, unique. Nowhere in the world exists so many countries which form a big family like EU.

The European U nion aims to be a fair society. To become prosperous; EU is creating new and better jobs and giving its citizens new possibilities to have a better life.

In January, 2007, the gates to EU opened and Romania entered. Romania entered in EU, in that place where it must have been for a long time.

Europeanization is a long, complex and delicate process and I don't consider myself an European as long as I have to tolerate people who spit, swear and smoke in public places every day. I think we are moving in slow motion and the process of civilization is a long and difficult one with different stages to attain. I'm not satisfied with the fact that our diplomas are acknowledged in the countries which are members of EU, with breaking bounderies or having European standards as long as our living conditions do not improve. Being in EU is just the first step and to change the system implies changing the people, changing yourself.
