Uterus Thickening

Q:   Ask a Question about Uterus Thickening
Uterus Thickening In medical terminologies, uterus thickening is known as "Endometrial Hyperplasia".
Endometrium is the lining of uterus which thickens and grows every month in matured women sexually.

Endometrium passes out during menstrual period if there is no happening of pregnancy. Female hormones are behind the changes in uterine lining, progesterone and estrogen. Estrogen thickens or constructs the lining of uterus and progesterone controls the growth.

The mid cycle ovulation happens and egg gets released. The drop in hormonal level is because of un-fertilization of the eggs causing regular menstrual period. Egg and lining get passed through menstrual blood.

The excessive or unusual cell growth in inner glandular lining of uterus (Endometrial Hyperplasia) is cause because of the imbalance between hormones (high level of estrogen and the low level of estrogen). If the cells of lining stay unchecked and untreated, they become abnormal which could result in uterus cancer.

Various reasons are behind the imbalance nature like menopause, obesity, irregular history of menstrual cycle, diabetes, health conditions related to ovary and hormone replacement therapy treatment (HRT) is some cases.

Because of the internal organ, uterus wall thickening cannot be noticed physically. However, there are some symptoms if observed by the person, immediately consult a gynecologist.

Bleeding or spotting between menstrual periods, lower abdomen pain, heavy or prolonged menstrual period and excess vaginal discharge. It is strongly advised not to ignore these symptoms as they can create further problems.

The treatment of uterus thickening depends upon severity which can be determined by series of test.

Generally, the first test conducted is the Pap test for identifying any cellular changes of cervix and then followed by the evaluation of uterus and endometrium by Pap smear, ultrasound, biopsy, curettage and hysteroscopy.

Endometrial hyperplasia can also be treated by medication or surgery. Hormone progesterone is utilized in medication causing the line to shed and avert it from growing again.

Understanding how and what consequences can be faced by thickening of uterus and hormones role is what this article is all about.

Endometrial hyperplasia of uterus is not cancerous by itself, but women being diagnosed with this condition are believed to be at higher risk compared to cancer.
