Venus Williams was already famous in the tennis group by the age of 14, but it was not until 31st October 1994 that she played her first tournament. It was her first game as a professional in the Bank of the West Classic in Oakland where she won the first round. In the second round she eventually lost the then world’s no. 2 Arantxa Sanchez. She played only this tournament that year.

Venus played three more tournament as wild card in the year 1995. Out of which she lost in the first round of the tournaments in LA and Toronto. However in Oakland she reached the quarterfinals by defeating World No 18 Amy Frazier. This was the first time she had won against a player above top 20. She lost to Magdalena Maleeva further ahead in the tournament.

In the year 1996 she played five tournaments. In four of these tournaments she lost in the first round and was unable to move forward. In the fifth tournament taking place in LA she reached the third round before she lost to World no. 1 Steffi Graf.
She became a regular player on the WTA tours by 1997. She defeated World no. 9 Iva Majoli in the Tier I State Evert Cup being held in Indian Wells in California. This was her first win against a player in top ten.

In quarterfinals she lost in the third set tiebreaker against Lindsay Davenport. It was shortly after this match that she broke her way into top 100 rankings. She lost in second round of French Open against Nathalie Tauziat. This was her debut year in French Open. In Wimbledon she won the first set against Magdalena Grzybowska but lost the first round.

At the age of seventeen she ranked World No. 66. Her biggest break came in the US Open. Here she reached her first semi-final ever.

She also defeated eighth seeded Anke Huber. She defeated 11th seeded Irina Spirlea in the semifinals and made it to the finals. However in the finals she lost World’s No. 1 Martina Hingis. After this she made to two quarterfinals in Tier I events. She lost to Davenport and Novotna in the quarterfinals at Zurich open and Kremlin Cup in Moscow respectively. At the end of this year she was World no. 22.
