Wearing UniformsMany people around the world wear uniforms to show what their job is, what school they go to, and so on.

A uniform is a set of standard clothing worn by members of an organization while participating in that organization's activity.

People performing religious activities have often worn standard costumes since the dawn of recorded history. Other early examples of people wearing uniforms include the clothing of the armies of the Roman Empire and other civilizations.

It's easy to find a policeman when you need help, because they wear a uniform. The uniform is not trie same in every country, though. In Italy, for example, policemen wear white uniforms in summer. In America, they wear dark-coloured uniforms with a gold badge on their jacket or shirt, and on the cap. Policemen often ca rry a radio, too, so they can caii other policemen.

Many British schoolchildren wear a school uniform. Chinese children wear a uniform, too. British school uniforms are usually dull grey, blue or black, but Chinese schoolchildren wear pretty caps and brightly-coloured shirts.

The famous Beefeaters at the Tower of London wear tradižional uniforms from the time of Queen Elizabeth I. They have a dark blue and red uniform with an old-fashioned hat, but they also wear a bright red and gold uniform on special days. Tourists Iove to have photographs of themselves next to a Beefeater!
