In 2005, almost 5,500 Romanian students went to the USA with the Work and Travel programme. The next year, more than 7,000 Romanian students decided to leave for the United States, and in 2007 it is estimated that the number will reach 10,000 students. This programme was organized by the United States of America in 1940 and belongs to a governmental politics which wants to mobilize the foreign labour, for short periods of time.
In order to be able to participate in the Work and Travel programme, one should respect some demands: he should have between 18 and 30 years, be student at a state university or at a private acknowledged one, not to be in the last year of the studies. Then, it is also important to have good marks (more than 7,50 and at least 9, for the stud
ents in the first year), no debts and have medium knowledge of English.
What does Work and Travel mean? It is supposed to help students leave their country to work and travel to the USA, during the summer holiday, for almost three months. The jobs are in restaurants, scholar camps, bars, hotels, casinos, shops or fast-foods, everywhere in America, from the sunny Florida to the icy Alaska.
The reasons for which the Romanian students decide to leave are various. First of all, it is an experience- you are on your own and take life to the full thousands of kilometers away from home. On the other hand, it is the best opportunity to see America, which is very difficult to visit in other way.
Does this experience imply more work or more travel? Obviously, this depends on the plans each one has. Some leave in order to gain as much money as possible and spend it when returning home. But still, the majority works for a period, puts apart the money invested when leaving, and spend the rest on trips and other entertainments. The trendiest thing is to buy a lot of clothes and a laptop, or at least a digital camera or an ipod. The idea is to leave the country with little luggage, because there you won’t realize how you have come to have two full suitcases.
There are cases when a student who has low marks or some debts can leave with the programme. The ones interested should know that the initial investment reaches 1,500-2,000$, which includes a tax paid the inscription, the tax to the Embassy of America for the interview in order to obtain the visa, the plane ticket and some pocket money until you receive your first salary.
Therefore, try to taste a little, with the top of your lips, from the sweetness of the famous 'American Dream'!
