Who first explored the South Seas?

Q:   Ask a Question about Who first explored the South Seas?
Who first explored the South Seas? Although other explorers had briefly passed through the region, Captain James Cook, a British explorer, was the first person to explore thoroughly the South Pacific region, including Australia and New Zealand.

He sailed there between 1768 and 1779, and soon realized that another great continent lay farther to the south. This was Antarctica, but Cook never set foot there.

He was eventually murdered by local people when he visited Hawaii.
