I have hardly known persons who don't like to gossip. In fact, one of them is my brother, who is a very trustful person and who feels no curiosity about the others' life. And when he finds out a spicy detail about a friend or a known person, he doesn’t like to say it to the rest of the group, but keeps the new information for himself.
However, people like to listen to gossips. It is a means of escaping routine and having new matters to talk about. Women generally enjoy finding out spicy details about not only famous or rich people, but about some neighbours, some friends and so on. There is not greater pleasure than having a cup of tea or coffee with your best friend and sharing the latest gossip.
Life would be boring if something extraordinary didn't happen, s
omething that has to catch the attention of the people around us. Sometimes people like to gossip from envy, because they are jealous when a known person achieves something in life. For example, when one neighbour buys a new car or makes an improvement in his flat, this will be a theme of gossiping for some of the women in the block. They are envious and, for this reason, they will gossip about their neighbour.
Moreover, people who don't have personal lives enjoy to gossip, so they lie to make themselves feel better and to feel they are indeed doing something useful all day long. Even if they can hurt the others with their lies, they don't care, because gossiping is their favourite preoccupation. They want to know everything that happens around them, to be well-informed, even if they sometimes consider this isn’t gossip.
Furthermore, people like to gossip to have fun, especially when they have an aversion to a certain person. It is fun to mock at that person, without being present, anyway. It's a way of leaving the time to pass and escape monotony.
To conclude, it seems that people like to gossip when their own lives feel rather empty, dull, boring, uninteresting, pointless and worthless. We could define gossip as being a form of female violence. They don't want to do it physically so they do it verbally. It's a form of libel and slander that seems so important to women but most men see it as being ridiculous and shallow.
