A Brief History of Stephen Hawking

A Brief History of Stephen HawkingStephen Hawking, the British physicist, was born in 1942, exactly three hundred years after the death of Galileo. At 35 he was to occupy the same post at the University of Cambridge as that once held by Isaac Newton, discoverer of the Law of Gravity. Like Galileo and Newton before him, Hawking revolutionised physics, challenging accepted beliefs. But Hawking had to fight not only for his beliefs, but against terrible disability as well.

Hawking was elected as one of the youngest Fellows of the Royal Society in 1974, was created a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1982, and became a Companion of Honour in 1989. Dr. Hawking is a member of the Board of Sponsors of The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.

When he was in his twenties and stiil a student, he was diagnosed as ha ving a wasting nervous disease. His doctors didn't think he would live to finish his studies. Against all predictions, he successfully completed his doctoral thesis, married, and had three children. In 1988 he published A Brief History of Time which went on to become an internažional best seller and was even made into a film. The figure of Hawking, sttting twisted in his wheelchair, became familiar the world over.

In 1985 he had a throat operation which saved his life, but which deprived him of his voice for ever. He learnt to communicate using a computer and voice synthesiser, picking out with his left hand one word at a time, at the rate of about 15 every minute. By this means he was able to give press conferences, contribute to scientific discussions, and make speeches, such as the one he made at the opening of the Paraplegic Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992.

At the celebration of his 65th birthday on January 8, 2007, Hawking announced his plans for a zero-gravity flight in 2007 to prepare for a sub-orbital spaceflight in 2009 on Virgin Galactic's space service. Billionaire Richard Branson pledged to pay all expenses for the flight, costing an estimated $163,100,000. Stephen Hawking's zero-gravity flight of Zero Gravity Corporation, during which he experienced weightlessness eight times, took place on April 26, 2007.
