When BBC World launched its television news channel a few years ago, people were initially thrilled. Finally a sophisticated, professional news organization would give CNN's often amateurish 24-hour operation a run for their money. The cheers were premature. Because the British Broadcasting Corporation is supported by license -fee payers in the United Kingdom. BBC World TV would have to pay for what it borrowed from the parent company and the organization couldn't afford to pick up as much as it wanted. Out in the field, many BBC reporters came to see World TV as a second-rate product. Unable to challenge CNN's strengths, BBC World couldn't stay clear of their rivals’ weaknesses.
BBC World began as a very different product from CNN International. The latter offer
ed news 24 hours as day, with relatively few chunks of time devoted to non- news programs. And it put a high premium on going live on major news stories. BBC World, on the other hand, offered a brief news repot at the beginning of every hour.
But even the best stuff was repeated for days on end. Throughout the day there might be superb programs, but at a given moment there might not be news when needed it-and what you did get was pretty thin. BBC World’s idea of going live was talking by telephone to someone’s photograph.
Now BBC World seems to be back in business. Its news program are sharper and longer and run for half or more of most hours. It is even going live more and, best of all, the network is using more of a great news organization’s resources.
Whereas a few years ago the future of BBC World looked like a hole in the ground, the situation has completely changed: with its army of journalists clustered around 200 workstations and a new 46-million pound complex as its headquarters, BBC World is the news-gathering brain for the most diversified news organizations in the world.
