People Convicted of Minor Crimes Should do Community Service Rather than go to Prison

 Q:
People Convicted of Minor Crimes Should do Community Service Rather than go to Prison- by Diana Trusca

It is common knowledge that it doesn't come easy for an individual to live by certain rules and obey the laws, especially in the twenty first century, a time marked by the search of our own personality and rebel side.

It doesn't come as a surprise that committing small crimes has become a free time activity for some persons in search of a way to entertain themselves. It is a fact that doing these acts and acknowledging the possibility of getting caught gives them a false feeling of freedom and makes them feel the rush of adrenaline going through their brain. But, once the police takes action, it is certain that they will have to face the consequences of their own actions.

There are arguments for and against of these people going to prison and one of them would be that prisons are already overpopulated, therefore, dealing with these people convicted for small crimes would only increase the problem. Moreover, just looking around us can help realize just how much we are in need of community service, and there would be no better punishment for these persons than working for the sake of the environment.

On the other hand, there is no certainty that the criminal, will find the experience benefic and that, once set free, he will not replace. After all, there is that belief that once you did something, you will do it again and, taking into account that we are talking about a deliquescent, maybe the next time the crime won't be minor. In addition to that, it comes as a relief for the other individuals to know that the offender is locked behind bars and to have the feeling that the police is successfully doing its job.

All things considered, we all must agree that, like in every other issue, opinions differ from one person to another, but one thing is for sure: the punishment should fit the crime. And whether the right punishment is prison or community service is not for me to decide, and nor is it for you. We should leave that to the judge.

It's true, I myself, being a law student find that punishments should fit the crime, but the judge is not the one to decide that punishment. The judge is bound to the stare decisis meaning he must follow precedent in order to come to a final verdict. So if someone got away with murder before, then it could happen again.
